"Klopp and Guardiola are unlikely candidates – John Barnes suggests the best manager for England."
Former Premier League star John Barnes has recommended that England appoint former Chelsea manager Graham Potter to succeed Gareth Southgate.
Barnes stated that pursuing managers like Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola would be unrealistic and a waste of time.
With Southgate resigning after the Euro 2024 championship, the Three Lions are in search of a new coach, considering several past and present Premier League managers.
Barnes, a Liverpool legend, believes Potter is the ideal candidate.
“Graham Potter should be the next England manager. If you talk about creating an identity and a system of play, look at examples like Guardiola and Klopp,” he told Sky Sports.
“They have completely different styles and players, but every player understands their role in the team. It’s not just about picking the best players.
“Who would do that? Constantly picking the best players. Then you’re talking about Eddie Howe or others, but unless you’re willing to pay five times what the England manager earns, managers like Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola aren’t going to take the job.”
