Euro 2024: "It drives me mad" – Souness reacts to Arsenal star making just one pass in 90 minutes

Former Newcastle United manager Graeme Souness expressed shock at the number of forward passes completed by England midfielder Declan Rice during the 2-1 Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.

According to DAILY POST, Rice, who plays for Arsenal in the Premier League, was part of Gareth Southgate's starting XI for the final match in Berlin. His selection was expected, as the 25-year-old had played every minute of England's games, including two instances of extra time.

Nico Williams opened the scoring for Spain two minutes into the second half, but England equalized through Cole Palmer in the 73rd minute. However, Mikel Oyarzabal secured an 86th-minute winner for La Roja, leading to England's defeat.

Speaking on the Up Front podcast (via TBR), Souness, a former Scotland midfielder, said, “It drove me mad watching their midfield play last night, as it has throughout the tournament. I’ve been doing some research on Whoscored.com, a very informative website. Question for you two: how many forward passes did Declan Rice complete in 90 minutes? One.

“One completed forward pass in 90 minutes for a midfield player. That’s impossible.”
